Price and buying
What does a used 275 gallon IBC tote cost?
Technical grade $95–$145, Grade A industrial $155–$225, certified food grade $225–$340, rebottled $340–$430, new $520–$690, cage only $35–$60. All ex-yard St. Louis, at ten or more units. Bands move with resin, scrap steel and diesel, so your quote is a real figure against staged stock rather than a catalogue number.
Is there a minimum order?
No. One tote ships LTL on its own pallet, and will-call collection has no minimum at all. The per-unit freight on small orders is high, which is a reason to consolidate but never a reason we would refuse you.
Why is the freight sometimes more than the tote?
Because an empty IBC is the worst possible LTL freight: it occupies a full pallet position and weighs 125 lb, so you pay for trailer floor and get no weight onto the bill. Ten units roughly halves per-unit freight and forty-eight halves it again.
Can I mix grades on one order?
Yes, and most buyers should. Four food-grade units for product and twenty technical units for wash water and ballast on the same truck, at no extra handling charge. Buying all twenty-four at food-grade price is simply burning money.
Do you publish stock counts?
No, deliberately. Stock turns weekly and any published count is wrong within days. We quote against pallets physically staged on the pad and send photographs of the actual cages, which is slower to produce and far more useful.
Do you offer terms?
Prepayment by ACH or wire for new accounts; net 30 on credit approval. Consolidated invoicing across multiple sites is routine for programme customers.
Can I inspect before I buy?
Yes. Will-call inspection during yard hours and Saturday mornings by appointment. Email ahead with the grade and quantity and the pallets will be staged with the paperwork ready. Closed-toe boots and long trousers.
Grades and food safety
What makes a tote food grade?
Three things together: edible prior contents proven from the unit's own data plate, a documented hot caustic CIP cycle with logged temperature, concentration, dwell and final pH, and a passed air-hold pressure test. Two out of three is a Grade A industrial tote. There is no partial credit.
Can a chemical tote be washed back to food grade?
No, and we have never made an exception. HDPE absorbs and slowly releases what it stores; a washed detergent tote is a clean detergent tote. If you need a food-grade vessel and only non-food bottles are available, the honest answer is rebottling.
Are used IBC totes safe for drinking water?
A documented food-grade or rebottled unit, yes, and it is our most common potable request. A technical-grade unit with unknown history, no. If your certifying authority wants a container that has only ever held water, buy rebottled and remove the argument.
Is NSF certification available on used totes?
No, from anyone. NSF listings apply to products as manufactured. What is available is documented provenance plus a documented wash, which is what a food-safety auditor actually asks to see.
What is the difference between Grade A and technical grade?
A pressure test and appearance. Grade A passes a 3 psi timed air hold, has a square cage, a sealing valve and a legible plate. Technical is sound and leak-free on hand inspection but untested and cosmetically used. Same wall thickness, same cage, same service life — roughly half the price.
What exactly is a rebottled tote?
A brand-new virgin HDPE bottle from FDA-compliant resin, fitted into a reclaimed cage that has been inspected, jig-straightened, abrasive-blasted and zinc-recoated, then air-hold tested and date-marked. New contact surface, reused structure, about 40% under new.
Why does an illegible data plate matter so much?
Because provenance is a document, not an inference. A tote with no plate could have held anything, and 'it smells like syrup' is not a food-safety control. An illegible plate drops a unit to technical grade permanently, however clean it looks.
Sizes, specs and fittings
What are standard IBC tote dimensions?
275 gallon: 48 × 40 × 46 inches, 125 lb tare. 330 gallon: 48 × 40 × 53 inches, 143 lb. 550 gallon: 62 × 48 × 64 inches, 265 lb. The 48 × 40 footprint is the GMA pallet standard and essentially never varies; height does, by up to an inch, depending on pallet construction.
Is a 275 gallon tote really 275 gallons?
No — it is 1,000 litres, which is 264.2 US gallons at the nominal fill line. Brim is about 288 gallons and you should never use it: thermal expansion alone is three-quarters of a gallon between 60 and 100 °F.
What is the difference between 275 and 330 gallon?
Height only. Same footprint, same 26 trailer positions, same forklift handling. The 330 is seven inches taller and holds 25% more. Choose 330 if floor space binds; choose 275 if clearance, doorway height or visual level checks matter.
How many gallons per inch of fill?
About 5.9 for a 275, 6.2 for a 330 and 8.6 for a 550, through the straight-walled middle band. Near the base and the shoulder the bottle tapers and a linear estimate overstates it.
What thread is on the outlet?
Usually 2-inch buttress in North America — coarse, shallow, square-flanked, ≈2.40 in across the male threads. European bottles use S60x6 (DIN 61) at 60 mm with a finer pitch. They will start on each other, bind and crack the boss, so identify before buying an adapter.
How do I connect a garden hose?
A 2-inch buttress to 3/4-inch GHT adapter, $9 — or the S60x6 version, $10. It is the most-ordered part we sell, because almost nobody expects a bulk container to need an adapter for a hose.
Should I use thread tape on a buttress fitting?
No. It is a face seal on a flat gasket at the base of the thread, not a thread seal. Tape prevents full seating and makes it leak. Clean dry EPDM gasket, hand tight plus a quarter turn with a strap wrench, stop.
How much does a full tote weigh?
Gallons × 8.345 × specific gravity + tare. A 275 of water is about 2,330 lb; of corn syrup at SG 1.38, about 3,170 lb. If you do not know the SG, design to 1.4.
How high can I stack them?
Empty, four high with cages interlocked on a level floor. Filled, two high on level concrete only. In a moving trailer, filled units are single tier with no exceptions.
Selling and recycling
Do you buy used IBC totes?
Yes, nationwide, from single units to standing fleet programmes. Food grade with an intact plate pays $55–$95; Grade A $35–$60; technical $15–$35; cracked bottle $6–$12. Twenty or more sellable units within about 400 miles of St. Louis and we normally cover the freight.
Do I need to clean them before selling?
No — cleaning is our job and we are better at it. They do need to be empty to commercially reasonable standards: drained, valve closed, no standing heel. A tote with twenty gallons of residue is a hazardous load, not a container, and will be refused at the gate.
What will you not accept?
Listed hazardous waste, unrinsed pesticide or herbicide containers, anything radioactive, infectious or explosive, containers whose prior contents you cannot identify, and units holding more than a trace heel. Tell us what it was and we will give a straight answer before a truck is booked.
How quickly do you pay?
ACH within five business days of receipt and grading. If our grading differs from your description we send photographs and the revised split before processing payment, and we return the load at our cost if the difference is our error.
Is selling really better than disposal?
The swing is $53–$100 per container on Grade A stock: you stop paying $18–$40 to have it hauled and start receiving $35–$60 for it. On forty units a month that is between $25,000 and $48,000 a year out of a line item currently labelled 'waste'.
What happens to totes you cannot resell?
Second-look review first — about one in nine gets pulled back out and fabricated into something. The rest is disassembled: bottles granulated, washed and pelletised into HDPE regrind; cages and steel pallets baled as galvanised scrap; timber ground for mulch and boiler fuel. Roughly 118 lb recovered per unit, nothing landfilled.
Sustainability
Is reuse actually better than recycling?
By roughly three to one on carbon for this product. Reconditioning a 275 gallon tote avoids about 71 lb of CO₂e against new manufacture; shredding and remoulding the same tote avoids about 23 lb, because you spend grinding, washing, drying, pelletising and moulding energy and regrind displaces virgin resin at less than one-to-one.
What is your actual diversion rate?
93% reused, 7% recycled, 0% landfilled, and we treat pushing the 7% down as the job. Nothing has gone to landfill since 2014, verified by the absence of disposal invoices in our accounts payable.
Are you carbon neutral?
No, and we will not claim it. We run forklifts, a boiler and trucks. We avoid considerably more than we emit, which is a different and more honest sentence. We also buy no offsets.
Does washing not cancel the carbon saving?
It would on a single-pass line. Our closed-loop caustic wash uses under 9 gallons of make-up water per tote against an industry typical of 40-plus, and wash energy is about 11 lb of the 93 lb footprint of a reconditioned unit.
Can I use your figures in a sustainability report?
The unit counts and tonnages, yes — they come from scale tickets. The CO₂e figure should be quoted with its range and a reference to our published method, not as a point estimate. Programme customers receive a statement scoped to their own serial numbers, which is what a supplier-specific disclosure actually needs.
Working with us
Why is there no phone number?
A decision made in 2016 after a grade dispute neither side could prove. Grades, prior contents, UN ratings and freight terms go wrong when spoken and remembered. Everything in writing cost us some impatient customers and eliminated nearly every argument we used to have.
How fast do you reply?
Same business day for anything submitted before 3:00 PM Central, Monday to Thursday. Friday afternoons are answered Monday morning. Programme quotes take two to three business days because we route the collection schedule before pricing it.
Where are you and what are your hours?
10275 Page Industrial Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63132. Monday to Thursday 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM Central, Friday 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Saturday 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM by appointment, closed Sunday.
Are you a broker?
Not for containers. Every unit is physically graded on our own pad, and the wash line, rebottling bench, fabrication shop and regrind bunker are all inside one fence. We do broker freight, because owning trucks is a different business.
What is your returns and inspection policy?
Five business days from delivery to inspect and reject anything that does not meet the purchased grade, with photographs and serial detail; properly rejected units are replaced or credited including return freight. Correctly supplied units are returnable within fifteen days less a 15% restocking charge and freight. Modified or cut units are not returnable.
Do you ship internationally?
Domestically, plus Canada and northern Mexico by arrangement. Export paperwork for reconditioned packaging is specific and slow, and the prior-contents documentation customs wants is far easier to assemble before a tote is washed than after — so ask early.
