7 Illinois markets served from St. Louis, on a weekly lane. Our densest intake state. Corn processing, agricultural chemistry and the Chicago industrial base put more containers into our yard than anywhere else, and the Metro East is effectively a suburb of the plant. Nearest market Granite City at 15 road miles; furthest Rockford at 340. Free collection on 20+ units — this is inside the backhaul radius
What drives container demand in Illinois
Illinois is the single largest source of containers in our intake, and the reason is corn. Wet milling and sweetener production generate enormous volumes of syrup totes with clean, documented, edible prior contents — which is the raw material of every food-grade unit we sell. If you buy a food-grade tote from us, there is a good chance it started in Illinois.
The state has three distinct markets. The Metro East — Granite City, Edwardsville, Belleville — is close enough to the yard that freight barely registers and will-call is normal. Central Illinois is agricultural chemistry and grain processing, with heavy spring demand for liquid fertiliser handling. Chicago and the collar counties are industrial, chemical and food manufacture at scale, with correspondingly large fleet programmes.
Because of that intake density, Illinois customers often get better availability on scarce formats. If you need matched 330 gallon food-grade units, an Illinois address is the easiest place in the country for us to fill it.

Freight into Illinois
Indicative per-unit freight on empty 275 gallon totes, computed at this state's average 176 road miles. Your own city page carries its own numbers, because the spread between Granite City and Rockford is larger than a state-wide figure can usefully express.
| Quantity | Best mode | Freight per unit |
|---|---|---|
| 1 unit | Standard LTL | $101 – $162 |
| 4 units | Standard LTL | $57 – $88 |
| 10 units | Volume LTL | $27 – $61 |
| 24 units | Partial truckload | $20 – $32 |
| 48 units | Full truckload | $12 – $23 |
Diesel-sensitive and indicative. The shape of the curve is reliable; the absolute numbers move with fuel. Note that forty-eight units costs roughly a sixth per unit of what one unit costs — consolidating is worth more than any discount we could offer.
Climate and handling notes
Both failure modes apply. Plan for 10% winter headspace and fit a UV sleeve on anything that lives outside more than one season.
Beyond that, the two things that actually kill containers in service are the same everywhere: standing water under the base frame, which corrodes galvanised tube from the underside where nobody looks, and forklift strikes to the lower cage rails. Get units off wet ground — a pair of reclaimed pallets costs nothing and adds years to a frame. See safety and stacking.

Illinois questions
How long does delivery to Illinois take?
same day will-call, or next day to Granite City at 15 road miles, and 1 – 2 business days to Rockford at 340 miles. Those are LTL transit figures after pick-up; add one to three business days for grading, washing and staging depending on the grade you order. Food-grade and rebottled units take longer because they are built to order rather than pulled from stock.
Will you collect empty totes from Illinois?
Yes. Free collection on 20+ units — this is inside the backhaul radius Our trucks run a weekly lane into Illinois, and because they would otherwise return to St. Louis empty, a collection on the return leg costs us the deviation and the loading time and almost nothing else. Stack four high with cages interlocked, drain and cap the valves, and keep food-history units separate from chemical-history ones — mixed stacks get graded down, which costs you money.
What grade do most Illinois buyers actually need?
Our densest intake state. Corn processing, agricultural chemistry and the Chicago industrial base put more containers into our yard than anywhere else, and the Metro East is effectively a suburb of the plant. In practice about a third of the enquiries we receive from any state are specified wrong, and roughly two in three of those are overspecified. Leave the grade field blank on the form and describe the product instead — the answer is usually cheaper than people expect.
Do I pay more for freight to Illinois than someone closer to the yard?
The goods cost the same everywhere — grade bands do not move by geography. Freight does, and so do accessorials: liftgate ($95–$140), limited access for a farm or site ($75–$110) and residential delivery ($85–$120). We ask about your dock and forklift up front so those appear in the quote rather than on the invoice.
What about winter and sun damage in Illinois?
Both failure modes apply. Plan for 10% winter headspace and fit a UV sleeve on anything that lives outside more than one season.
Quoting Illinois delivered, not ex-yard
Send a postal code, a quantity and whether you have a forklift. That is enough for a number that will match the invoice.
